Morgan Evans

My name is Morgan Evans, and I’m an Appalachian folk/outsider artist! I’m inspired by the environment I was brought up in, all the ups and downs of  Eastern Kentucky. I take inspiration from my inner child and the people who showed me kindness when I was growing up in not-so-safe places.

Most of my work is acrylic on canvas, found wood, and other objects like old windows, driftwood, farm equipment, shovels, thrifted frames, or whatever else I can dig up. I try to be as sustainable as I can when making my art. I prefer to make unwanted things new again.

I have owned my own art business for 8 years now, and I have a wonderful community of customers and collectors all over the world. I am also an Appalachian poet, and I love words just as much as paint!

My business, Spared Splinter, was named to represent the forgotten things, the spared pieces and leftovers that are often seen as the troubled or misunderstood. The broken splinters many no longer see as valuable. Many of my pieces depict anthropomorphic animals, usually small and usually with questionable habits like smoking or drinking. The small animals represent the underdogs of Appalachia, the downtrodden, the dreamers, the fighters who wake up each morning bound to persevere.

I take great pride in being a folk artist with a childlike approach. I don’t worry too much about the technical aspects of what makes something “good” or “bad.” I appreciate the process and try not to categorize myself as good or bad, but “just an artist.” Which anybody can be. :)
