Brooklyn March 12, 1860

Dear Mollie

Oings to a previous arangement I now sit down to address you this note in hopes

it may be recieved in the spirit it is written. On the evening before your journey I

sugested to you the wishes of my mind. I did not expect a desided answre at the time

as I am aware such a step should be well considerd before acting up on. I feel some

what ancious to no your thoughts on the matter if you have ever had an idea that such a

matter would be brought up. I have no doubt you have considered the propritaty of it

already. lt may be considered presumtious in me to ask a young girl to become my wife

as you are aware I am much older than you but such things have bin and may be again

and turn out well. I believe that with Mollie by my side I could go through this

troublesome world with pleushure and if you think you can take Billy Jones by the hand

as a partner through life and be happy say yes and I will aggree to lift you out of the

mud and myre …..

…..as often as you may get in if you dont go to deep. I went over to Mr

Hodsons yesterday. Found them all well but a little lonesome and sad for the want of

Millie to enliven them with her presnce. We could not get up a song to raise our spirits.

We tried to sing he has taken my feet out of the mire and the clay but it was a no go. lf

you had bin there every thing would looked different. The grass would looked greener

the sky would looked clearer. Theur would bin music in our songs but then you wasent

thur so we had to content ourselfs with a concert from Dutely across the way. I think it

was a general drunk all aound over theur. Thea had the owner of the house tied with a

rope and his wife after the watchman. What a pleasunt thing it is to be married. Aint it

very encourageing indeed. Excuse me for asociating your name with such a sell.

I do not know that I could say anney thing more on the subject started out on

theur is maney things I could say if I knew you where faverable imprest in my behalf.

Theurefore I shall look with some angsiaty for an answer from you. lf I have bin

mistakened in thinking your …..
