BOYD’S STATION Mary Withers FELLOW - 2023 | Harvard University

I’m an aspiring science journalist, and I think this fellowship would provide me with a unique opportunity to examine rural healthcare systems, which tend to be overlooked and underreported. In March 2020, I read a New York Times article on a COVID outbreak upending normal life in Cynthiana; it described the challenges of quarantining and contact tracing in a close-knit community. I’d love to work on an extended project that not only follows up on how Harrison County has recovered from the pandemic but also how it is reacting to Dobbs, tackling the opioid epidemic, and working to help residents access regular healthcare services. With the flexibility and resources from this fellowship, I could immerse myself in the community and get to know healthcare providers and patients — to tell a fuller story of how health and illness impact their daily lives, instead of reducing them to statistics
